Fairy Tales of the Baker Grimes

Lately…

I have neglected my blog, but I have been baking away. So will update soon with recipes and pictures. Maybe even some reviews from tasters :)

Just one way of eating them!

Brownies

On Sunday i tackled Brownies.

I was trying to make them wheat and diary free but unfortunately i only had plain chocolate in the house.

I followed a recipe from a gluten free book and they turned out deliciously!

There were crispy on top and fudge-y in the middle and so so chocolate-y.

You could not tell at all that they had no wheat in, they are defiantly the best i have tried and will be trying them again.

Although i followed a recipe this time, next time i am thinking of adding my own twist with some coconut and nuts.

The colleagues can be guinea pigs for these, they will be please :)

Take Away

On Friday the Boyfriend and i were feeling lazy, so decided to chance a Chinese takeaway to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Normally i steer well clear of anything that i can’t see what’s in it. Especially Chinese because of soy sauce and wheat noodles.

I did some research and found out some dishes i could possible eat and headed down to our local Chinese takeaway.

The owner is such a friendly lady and when i explained to her i couldnt eat wheat, she couldnt be more helpful.

She read through our order and told me which dishes were safe for me and what were not.

She even offered to cook my rice in a different way as she knew starch could be a problem.

Her knowledge of her recipes was enviable and she knew everything that could have come into contact with wheat.

Not only did she tell me what was ok on my order, she went one step further and told me which dishes on the extended menu i could eat and also offered to make things without sauces.

It was lovely to be thought of and i defiantly felt like a valued customer, even though this was the first time i had been in. I will defiantly be back.

So if you can’t eat wheat or even diary and fancy a Chinese take away, i suggest befriending the owner or front of house of your local takeaway and asking if they could do anything.

The worst thing they will say is no, but you’ll never know unless you ask!

She even gave me a fortune cooking, which of course i couldn’t eat but i was grateful for the fortune!

Lunch

A wheat free mine field! I think your best bet is shushi, if you throw away the soy sauce. Or soup if you can ask if wheat had been used to thicken it. Also another favourite is a fresh jacket potato with beans. Or a homemade sandwich with gluten free bread, but use a bit of pickle or sauce, as it can be quiet dry!

First Post - little long

So this is my first post.

A little bit about me, I’m a girl who loves tea and cake.

About 6 months ago I was told I could no longer eat wheat, which to me meant no more cake :(

I had to change my diet drastically and along with that my lifestyle, no more going on for dinner with ease or eating what i fancied.

Eating became a chore, i was forever checking the back of packets and longing for bread and cake.

I soon became aware of ‘free from’ ranges in supermarkets and one day settled down to a gluten, wheat and diary free lemon and poppy seed cake. Much to my horror, it tasted stale, it was dry and tasted horrible. I was horribly aware that i would never eat cake again.

However, i am a dab hand at baking and though that i may look into the world of allergen free baking, i treated myself to a few recipe books and got myself back into the kitchen.

The first thing i tackled was a wheat free lemon drizzle and cake and it wasn’t perfect but a thousand times better than what you find in the supermarkets.

I now test all my recipes on my partner and, much to their delight, my colleagues at work.

Hopefully this will be a collection of places to eat, recipes and generally chat about life without wheat.
